COVID-19 UPDATE: Report shows 90 percent increase in childhood infections

There has been a 90 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among children in the United States over the last four weeks, according to a new analysis by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association that will be updated weekly. That and more in today’s Wayne County Report for August 12, 2020.

Dr. Sean O’Leary, vice-chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases stated: "It’s not fair to say that this virus is completely benign in children…We’ve had 90 deaths in children in the U.S. already, in just a few months. Every year we worry about influenza in children, and there are roughly around 100 deaths in children from influenza every year."

In the countywide COVID-19 statistics released August 11, 2020, Taylor registered four newly confirmed cases, upping the community’s annual total to 881. There were no new deaths; that number remains at 73.
