City working with MDOT to find a way to reopen Beech Daly Road

Due to the extraordinary heavy snowfall on November 11 and subsequent record low temperatures, the City of Taylor, the Michigan Department of Transportation and its contractors are seeking ways to reopen Beech Daly Road, so both north and southbound lanes can be opened for traffic over the course of the winter until the remaining work can be completed in the spring.

“Knowing that this is an official MDOT program, we will continue to work with them to find a workable solution,” Mayor Rick Sollars said. “We understand everyone’s frustration with this issue.”

The resurfacing project along Beech Daly, between Brest and Wick roads, had already been slowed by weather before the snowfall, which blanketed the region with over nine inches of snow and sent temperatures plummeting below 10 degrees.

At the present time, asphalt contractors working on the project predict that they can provide a base coating of asphalt on the southbound lane if snow can be cleared, the surface dried and temperatures rise above 40 degrees. If those factors can be hurdled, traffic can be reopened on both lanes. The total completion of the resurfacing to both lanes would be delayed until the spring 2020.

Taylor isn’t the only community fighting weather-related issues involving MDOT-related projects. MDOT Spokesman Jeff Cranson told The Detroit Free Press that recent record-cold temperatures and snow across Michigan have prevented the completion of construction projects statewide, including major work on I-75, I-475 near Flint, M-66 in Ionia County and work on the Cooley Bridge near Manistee.

Under ordinary circumstances, MDOT projects would be would have been wrapping up in the second week of November. This year, many are running behind and drivers may face detours and delays through the winter.
