COVID-19 UPDATE: Georgia camp shows disease spread quickly through children

A report on how COVID-19 cases spread rapidly through a summer camp in Georgia suggests children transmit the virus very well. Nearly 600 young campers and counselors attended the camp in late June, and of the 344 who were tested for COVID-19, 76 percent tested positive by mid-July. This and more in today’s Wayne County Report.

Three-quarters of the COVID-19 cases involved symptoms including sore throat, headache and fever. Campers averaged 12 years of age and hadn’t been required to wear masks although camp staff wore masks. The camp was quickly disbanded and it closed on June 27.

According to Wayne County’s August 3, 2020, countywide COVID-19 health data, only one new case was confirmed in Taylor, upping the year-to-date total to 842 in the community. No new deaths were recorded; that total remains at 72 this year.
